Sixth Form Students Address Film Premiere at City Hall

Last November, Sixth Form students worked with the charity “Alone in London” and the director, Simon Godden, to make a DVD about issues that may cause conflict in the family. “Alone in London” which is part of EPIC trust and Circle Anglia, secured funding from city businesses to make the DVD, feeling that it would help more young people to become aware of what homelessness means and how family conflict can be avoided.

The DVD and teaching pack were launched at a reception in “London’s Living Room”, a venue at the top of City Hall. The guests, who were from charity groups, youth support groups, London boroughs and the Mayor’s office, first heard from representatives of the charity, explaining why they had felt the need to produce this resource for schools. The key note speech was given by James Cleverly who is the Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group on the London assembly and the Mayor’s Ambassador for Young People.

Sabrina Dacres-Smith and Zoe O’Mahoney James, now in Year 13, auditioned and obtained speaking roles in the film. The spoke eloquently in front of the large group about what they had gained from making the DVD and how they thought it would benefit students across the country. When asked about how they had been affected, Zoe replied that making the DVD had made her realise that she wanted to study child psychology and Sabrina is now aiming to become a social worker, specialising in working with young people. Both will now be completing work experience with “Alone in London”. Ms Cullen, Cator Park’s Family Support Manager, answered questions about how the DVD and resource pack will be used in school. Ms Davies, Mrs Harris and Zoe and Sabrina’s mothers were also invited to the event.

The DVD and its launch also made the London lunchtime television news and the Evening Standard.
